What are some good protein substitutes for vegetarians?
I'm having a hard time finding foods that contain sufficient protein to compensate for my vegetarian diet. I'm not sure about what foods contain the most protein. What are my options?
Answers:
Not trying to sound like a smart alec, but if you're worried about a protein deficiency, maybe you should reconsider your decision not to eat meat.
Otherwise, tofu is good.
Other Answers:
1. tofu
2. eggs
My answer was initially X-Rated, but I withheld.
Try eggs and nuts.
You shouldn't have any trouble meeting your protein requirements as long as you are eating a balanced diet. Assuming you are not vegan, eggs and dairy products are protein sources. Legumes (beans, peanuts, soybeans and soy products) are an excellent non-animal source of protein, as are grains. People tend to think of all grain products (bread and pasta in particular) in terms of their carb content, but just look at the nutrition information for a serving of pasta or two slices of whole wheat bread... there's protein in there, too!
Eggs, milk, beans, tofu, and soy. You are better off with a variety of sources of protein, and taking good multivitamin with a meal.
You people are all nuts! In order to live one must kill. It is the nature of things. That tofu you're so crazy about, it came from living soybeans that could have grown to make more soy bean plants, you murdered it. In my view, I can't see the difference between a carrot or a cow, just because the carrot doesn’t have eyes or walk, doesn't mean it wasn't alive. If you think so, then you my foolish friend are fooling yourself. Here's another little fact you might want to consider, human beings are carnivorous animals, just like the lion. The lion eats the zebra, are we better then the lion? We are the only animal that's full of ourselves, think because we can walk and talk that we're better then all the other animals, well guess what? We're not. Also talk about the circle of life, the plants feed off of water and sun and feces, plant eaters eat the plants and meat eaters eat the plant eaters. It is the way of things and no idiotic religious group is ever going to change that order. You are just hurting yourself and the sooner the Government steps in and says this is stupid and outlawed the better!!!!
Kelp. There are three varieties of seaweed you can buy. the best are from Japan and California. Make sure they are from the ocean and not farmed in containers.
Fish, eggs,7 grain bread,shell-fish.
Haven't been a vegetarian in years, but I remember this much. Don't let the Meat-Eaters get you down. Take care -t
nuts,(peanut butter), fish/seafood (sardines are full of it),beans, dairy products..
A good source of protein for a vegetarian are the eggs.
The eggs contain fat, satured fat, cholesterol, and about 6g of protein (13%) so if you want to have alot of protein in your body eat eggs twice a week.
This is the only option!

Try this variety. Of course, excluding the meat, chicken and food section.
Seitan, TVP (textured vegetable protein), plis liquid aminos sold at health food stores. Some eat eggs and dairy, but not vegans.
Soy in small amounts is OK too, but read up on say, becuase it has some negative side effects.
Understand the combining legumes with starches is a complete protein.
take vitamins like Centrum
tofu, burn it off cause lots of fat or high in fat
fruits (5 a day), veggies (4 a day), eggs (once per week)
dairy products (3 a day)
no sodas, junk food, sugary stuff, high in fat foods, chips, etc.
cereal like Cheereos (the plain and no flavor one)
also, those fitness/diet bars that have a ton of stuff, just don't get one with the chocolate coating or anything like that
peanut butter
why are these people saying eggs? arent eggs anti vegetarian?
lol
I've been a vegetarian for 14 years and it is amazing what you can conjure up!! Beans, spinach, broccoli, eggs, nuts- there are so many, I'd say tuna fish and seafood are your best sources if your not vegan. Also, have a protein shake everyday, there is tons of nutrients that we need in them. Try Naturade Veg Protein Booster and also make sure you take Iron, I'm anemic because I don't eat meat, but Iron supplements are very good for "our kind"!!
beans, or other legumes
Tofu and soy products are the highest and whole grains are good too. Some will allow dairy or egg supplements.
Tofu, eggs, cheese, peanutbutter, nuts
tofu
soy, mushrooms, eggs
Consider the bat, eats fruits and yet, sometimes dines on the blood a thing we call future steak. When the wolf brings the dead bloody carcass of some tasty creature home to the pregnant mate, it is a sign of love and caring for his offspring and for his mate for life. The point is, care all you want, clean yourself of all you want, but realize, sometimes a potent liver is more restorative than an entire planet full of beans. That is why we have liver and onions.
If all else fails, every cell in your body is programmed to form a protein based on what the RNA says that runs the entire thing on ribosomes. Watch out though, the cell can detect phony ribosome substitutes. I swear that there is some kind of super spherical detector in there that can tell if it is a ribosome, a plastic bead, or a bacterium.
Please don't starve yourself. You may be just secretly wanting to dine out, have dinner with some cute boy or rock star, and you don't want anyone to know you actually wanted to go.
Trust me, I know where all the dead bodies are buried in the last generation.
tofu, eggs & nuts
soy beans
I say for you to actually eat nuts, fruit, tofu, sushi if you don't eat meat but eeat fish?! and by the way do you eat poultry or just no meat at all?!... :D
Soya protien (tofu) and lentils of all types.
Finding a substitute is the easy part - getting to prepare it is the difficult.
You can try Chinese or any Asian preparation for Tofu, while lentils can be prepared the Mexican way or Indian way to make it tasty.
I am a Vegan now for over a year and have never felt better. All of my sinus problems have disappeared as well as other health considerations...blood pressure has lowered as well as cholesterol and I am losing weight! My best advice for a good protein substitute is any soy product. I eat a lot of tofu (which can be added to just about ANY dish and made to taste like anything) and I drink a lot of organic soy milk. I usually buy the store brand as it contains no careegan...coloring agent that has been shown to be "iffy" in the fight against cancer. Vegans eat or use NO animal products so I don't touch dairy or eggs or fish. I still get plenty of excellent protein by eating a bowl of B-12 fortified cereal in the morning with soy milk, eating some fresh vegetables with brown rice and peanuts at lunch and then some more vegetables with tofu or seitan (another great soy product) and some vegan pasta at night. I also eat 6 servings of assorted fruits during the day...it seems I am ALWAYS snacking...I am sure to include great antioxidant fruits like blueberries and organic apples as well as citrus fruits...either juiced or whole. I take a good vegan multivitamin and a good stress vegan B vitamin combo. I take flax and borage oils as well. I think the key is to eat plenty and NUTRITIOUSLY. I don't drink any sodas or sugar drinks...I have iced green or white tea and Splenda to drink as well as plenty of good old water and ice. I will NEVER go back to eating animal products or using animal products. Even though I am blood type AB+...I am "supposed" to eat lots of dairy products and modern meats...this Vegan lifestyle has suited me to a T!!!

I have a paper that lists the different combinations of food that will give me complete protein. It is called, "Mix and Match For Complete Protein." Ask for it at a health food store or maybe from a friend that is a vegetarian. An ex: a meal of milk, asparagus, lima beans and cormeal would be a healthy, complete protein meal. Good luck, friend.
Beans.. i eat black beans, black eyed peas, and chick peas. yummy
