is confectioners sugar the same as regular plain old sugar?
Answers:
it's not the same. plain sugar is granular where as confectioners sugar same as powdered sugar is sugar that has been ground up and mixed with cornstarch to prevent clumping.. there is no difference unless you call it 10x, 6x, or 4x. Powdered sugar that is usually in the stores is 10x and that's what most pastry chefs uses hope that helps

The taste is the same, but the texure is powdery so it allows it to be mixed into a variety of recipes, and it can be sprinkled.
It is the same thing with a little corn starch tossed in to keep it from clumping together.
In a pinch, you can put regular sugar into your blender or foodprocessor and zap it a few times (a couple of seconds) and make your own, but I have only done this for the "dusting" I do to cakes and cookies, for cooking, I buy the box or bag, it is just easier.
Confectioners sugar is refered to in bakeries as 10X, powdered sugar is 6X. This refers to the size of the sugar crystal. The bigger the number the finer the texture.
