big rubber spatualas work best then finish up with a small butter knife
that depends on the effect you want. sometimes i spread it on with a spoon but then take a fork to it in several directions. if you want texture try adding fruit to the frosting too.
I agree with all of the above just use a spatula for the base and then use the other utensils with a little imagination to decorate and experiment with different designs.
U should be fine with a spatula.
My favorite frosting is really easy and probably laughed at by real bakers. Take a soft stick of butter and beat it with powdered sugar until it's the consistency that you like. Spread it on the cake with a big spatula.
I use spreader knives which are like a spatula which is bent close to the handle so you can spread the icing without messing it up
