German chocolate, used in German Chocolate cake, isn't actually from Germany, but rather was invented by a man named Samuel German. It's a type of baking chocolate that is milder than most baking chocolate (it's similar to milk chocolate in flavor) and is lightly sweetened, unlike most baking chocolate.
German chocolate cake uses this kind of baking chocolate, as well as buttermilk in the cake, and is traditionally frosted with a frosting made of coconuts, pecans and caramel.

The chocolate in a German Chocolate Cake is just ordinary chocolate (not even from Germany).
What makes it taste so special is the grated coconut.
It is called a German Chocolate Cake, because it was invented by some German baker in Chicago.
In Germany you will not find it.

I used to be a Dutch baker.
If I would have invented it, it would now be called a Dutch Chocolate Cake!
