I know my dog likes leftovers. Can animals taste salty and sweet foods or tell if something is spicy?

If I wanted to make some food for my dog, what would be healthy and safe to feed her? I found a recipe for dog biscuits but my animal is very old and she needs some soft foods. The canned food seems to cut right through her. I like to give her a mix of half crunchy and half wet foods. She does well on this because the gravy from the wet foods coats the crunchy stuff and she eats her food. I have noticed that liver is cheap in stores but I wondered how to cook it and how to make some kind of sauce. I know how to cook for people, how do you cook for dogs? I have heard the term "salt to taste", but what are a dogs' taste? I know I could make a good healthy food for my dog but I don't know how to begin and I don't want to hurt her in the process. Cleo is over 12 years old by the way and some medical problems have left her without an appetite. I also rely on the wet dog foods to put her medicine into. This information would be a big help as I am on a budget and her medicine is expensive.

dogs love salt! go to the pet store and look at the back of a sience deit dog food bag for older dogs that will tell you how much proten and such your dog needs than cook up a meat in a big pan and save the juices from the meat than add flour to the sause or corn starch untill its thick than addd lots of salt and put it over rice and you and your dog will love it!!!!

I beleive they taste there food with there sense of smell.

i dont know, but we used to throw hot peppers to a pomerian and it would pretty much just swallow them as fast as it could, stupid thing. It is safe for a dog to eat Chicken or beef with rice! It is good for their digestive system and it's relatively soft so your dog shouldn't have an issue w/ eating it.

They can smell if a food is spicy or if its sweet. They dont taste and see as well.

You can only experiment. If your dog does not feel well and looses her appetite then she should see a Vet. Dogs have a more developed sense of taste and smell than humans but it is different. Different dogs like different foods. See a vet.

Every dog I have seen eat human food gulps it down too fast to taste anything. I used to feed this one dog ridiculously spicy hot beer sausages. He'd practially swallow it whole, so that he didn't miss the chance for another, should one become available while he was busy chewing the previous one. yes dog have taste buds and can tell the difference

Sue, I have a very small dog and he's twelve also. When he won't eat for one reason or another, he'll eat ice cream outta the bowl and wait for more. He won't eat anything salty so there must be some kind of discerning factor there. He eats most things that I do, but never a vegetable. Rachael Ray on the Food Network asked her vet about "Boo" eating baked squash and things and the vet said it was fine, so maybe you should email her 'cause shes already done the leg work. Good-luck Sue! Dee

just a precaution: the vet will advise you not to feed your pet table food or human food with the exception of some lean turkey meat or chicken meat as well as a piece of cheese every so often. their nutrition comes from their own food. also, several human food items are toxic to dogs. the following are just a few:
1. chocolate
2. raisins
3. nuts especially macadamian nuts
4. dough
get a complete list from your vet.

yes you can give him salty, sweet, spicy kinds of foods but it needs to be something your animal likes
