I still dont know the guidelines for using an oven. Am I supposed to clean it everytime?

You don't have to clean it every time. But in order to prevent a dirty oven. If you are making something you know will drip all over the bottom of the oven line the bottom of your oven with tin foil. Then you can just throw the foil out instead of cleaning your oven every time.
No. only clean it if it starts to catch on fire when you heat something.

For my self cleaning oven, I probably run it twice a year unless I made a big mess from something spilling over.
I even had a neighbor that had so much gunk in the oven that the bottom caught fire. I was over for dinner and wanted to throw something in the oven to heat up. I opened the oven door and I see flames. They non-chalantly walked over and just sprinkled some baking soda over the fire and continued cooking. They did eventually clean the oven, but it was 3 months later after the baking soda formed a 1" thick layer...
That's a little too extreme for me... lol

I clean mine every winter. Only cause I live in MN so its cold as heck here so with all the heat the oven gives off it makes more sense to do it then. I also use it more during that time.
I clean any spills as they occur.
Other than that I clean twice a yr.
Once in the spring and again in the fall.
I saw the answer for using foil which is a good idea but if you do that make sure the foil does not touch the burner or it will arc and burn the element out.I learned the hard way.
Clean it when it needs cleaning! You gotta give the thing a chance to get dirty to make the energy cost worthwhile.
